What a beautiful destination. It's such a long trip from the Pacific Northwest of the US, but well worth the trouble. With an overnight in Barbados coming and going I had a warm welcome at a small guest house on the beach in Worthing. After a short flight to St. Vincent and a quick taxi ride I was ushered across the bay by small ferry to the Young Island Resort. Met with a fruit punch drink I was soon settled into a relaxing tropical wonderland complete with beautiful landscaping and strolling peacocks. Rooms were comfortable, with a view of the water and tropical greenery. The reason for coming was of course the scuba diving. It was here that I was most pleasantly surprised. There is lots of variety and except for a small amount of what is probably temporary coral bleaching, the reef is very healthy. No large animals, but plenty of unusual critters to keep everyone happy. Visibility was at its worst because of the seasonal rains, but the possibility of wide angle underwater scenes was obvious with the schooling fish, very large barrel sponges, tall soft corals, hard coral formations and black coral in relatively shallow waters. The St. Vincent Dive operation was well run and the boats clean and comfortable. It was a very pleasant week and I was able to accomplish my mission of becoming acquainted with my new digital camera set up with the expert guidance of Stephen Frink, the person responsible for choosing this wonderful destination for his photo tour.
